This series is designed to provide an entry level introduction into the FAE Role

Format:

  • 4 days of instruction (32 Hours)

    • 24 hours classroom

    • 8 hours manipulative

Topics Covered:

  • What an Engineer does

  • How apparatus works

  • Basic appartaus capabilities

  • Initial strategy/tactics from the FAE perspective

  • Provide a clear path to the FAE promotion

Usually 100 question, multiple choice exam (subject to change anytime)

The written exam is based on the material from: 

  • The FAE Development Series

  • The FAE Promotional Study Material

  • Practice test questions

  • Practice hydraulics calculations

Oral Interview (10%)

The materials with which you should be comfortable before a panel interview are:

•Your qualifications (90 second opener)

•Why you feel you are best suited for the position

•Your/others’ view of your strengths and weaknesses

•Issues facing the department

•The department’s mission and values

•Your long-term goals

•Your problem-solving skills

  • Introduction to Aerial Apparatus

  • Positioning Aerial Apparatus

  • Stabilizing the Apparatus

  • Operating Aerial Apparatus

8- Week FAE Academy:

Candidates who achieve 80% or greater on the written exam and oral interview will be placed into the Fire Apparatus Engineer Academy in ranked order.

The academy is designed to teach the learning components, test on component knowledge, and then see the knowledge applied in the Academy Assessment Center during the final week. 

Final scores will place fire apparatus engineers on a ranked list.

ELIGIBILITY List

Dependent upon staffing levels at the time, a promotional eligibility list may be established in rank order and promotions will occur in rank order. The promotional eligibility list will remain in effect for a period of one (1) year from the date of establishment or until all the names on the list are exhausted. The eligibility list may be extended by mutual agreement of the parties.
