CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer is the number one cause of firefighter line of duty deaths. Here at Orange County Fire Authority, 13 members, on average, receive a cancer diagnoses each year. Turn knowledge into action this month. You can prevent or limit your exposure to carcinogens. By shining a light on Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, it is our intent to foster an environment that embraces open dialogue and to reduce the risk of personnel proactively.

Throughout the month, OCFA and Local 3631 will be sharing important cancer awareness information about how exposures occur, ways in which you can protect yourself, new ways to track your exposures, and activities to support the campaign. Research shows the more a person knows about a topic, the more inclined they are to act. To get the most out of this month, we encourage you to view all the materials being provided, take any necessary steps to help prevent cancer.

Cancer is the biggest killer of America’s firefighters. It’s the #1 cause of firefighter line-of-duty deaths. In the last three years, an average of 77% of the names of those honored at the IAFF Wall of Honor ceremony died from cancer. This trend must stop.

OCFA, working in coordination with Orange County Professional Firefighters Local 3631, has targeted decreasing the risk of firefighter cancer over the past several years. It has led to better equipment, a hood and glove exchange, fireground decontamination procedures and more.
