To help with multiple anticipated paramedic vacancies, the EMS section is planning on testing for Orange County paramedic accreditation and sending students to paramedic school. The current plan for testing is as follows:

Paramedic Accreditation

• Dates for the next process:

  • Application Period: Closes December 2020

  • Accreditation Academy: January 11 - 22, 2021 (M-F 0800-1700)

  • Evaluation Shifts Begin: January 29, 2021

• During the academy, candidates must achieve a minimum passing score of 80% on both the written

  exam and simulated patient care scenarios. Upon successful completion of the two-week academy, the candidates will move on to the field evaluation shifts. The field evaluation portion will remain the same and is typically five shifts. The process will be two-weeks in length and include all requirements set forth in OCFA SOP. HR.05.01.

Paramedic School Testing

• Dates for the next process:

  • Application Deadline January 11, 2021 at 1700

  • Prep Days January 14th or 19th, 2021 (Same class)

  • Exam Days January 25 – 29, 2021

  Testing:

  • The process will be in accordance with SOP HR.05.01 EMS Licensure, Accreditation, and Certification, and include a written exam, oral interview, and patient care simulation. All candidates that achieve a passing score of 80% or higher will be placed on an eligibility list.

• Selection:

  • Candidates will be selected based upon department need, giving priority to firefighters and then to the other ranks in the order of the list based on scoring. If a candidate were to pass the exam and not be selected for the current offering, he/she would remain on the list for future opportunities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Paramedics are entry-level leaders; they run the scene, are responsible for gear, delegate, empathize, and talk on the radio. While not required to promote to fire captain, it's a great training ground to begin a leadership career.

Successful paramedics are strong communicators, composed, show empathy, manage the scene, are constantly evaluating the situation, and have effective patient care.

Paramedic Training Candidates must complete the following steps for sponsorship:

• Didactic and Skills

• Hospital Clinical

• Field Internship

• National Registry Testing

• Licensing Requirements

Upon completion, the OCFA EMS Section will request accreditation from OCEMS.

SCHEDULE & TRAINING

Even years (e.g. 2018): Paramedic training begins in January and August.

Odd years (e.g. 2019): Paramedic training begins in April.

Recruitment for Paramedic Training Candidates begins 2-3 months prior to coursework.

Selected Paramedic Training Candidates who successfully complete the training process must agree to a two (2) year assignment in a paramedic position.

Paramedic Training Candidates will be assigned to a 40-hour work week. During the Didactic and Skills training portion, class meets Monday-Friday for approximately 12 weeks.

• 4 Months of medic school

• 1 Month hospital rotation

• 2 Month field internship (shift schedule)

• National registry exam (pass the exam, submit paperwork, receive paramedic license, process county paperwork).

PARAMEDICS WHO ARE NOT LOCALLY ACCREDITED:

• Local accreditation will occur based on need (typically soon after a firefighter academy).

COMPENSATION

• Paramedic Pay is outlined in the "Specialty Pay" section of the OCPFA IAFF- Local 3631 MOU (Article XXIV, Section 3).

ENTRY-LEVEL PARAMEDICS:

• Agree to a 2-year assignment in a paramedic post position

• Minimum of 1 year of experience as a full-time OCFA firefighter (or equivalent experience with a transitioning agency)

• Minimum of standard rating on current performance appraisal (may be waived for transitioning employees)

• Recommendation from immediate supervisor with battalion chief concurrence.

• Proof of passing college-level English or take the matriculation exam.

• Pass the college health screening.

ENTRY-LEVEL PARAMEDICS:

• Recruitment opens

• Online application

• Provide EMT card and heath care provider CPR card

• Letter of recommendation from immediate supervisor

• Letter of battalion chief's concurrence.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:

• Written test to evaluate EMT knowledge

• Simulated patient care scenarios to evaluate EMT skills (Including checking for organization, communication, delegation, pass along, and critical thinking)

• Oral Interview (including ethical situations, basic medic knowledge out of TAP and TAG, patient advocacy practices, decision making, and customer service mindset.)

Upon successful completion of the didactic, National Registry testing, hospital clinical experience, field internship, and licensing requirements student will have completed all of the step for sponsorship. The OCFA EMS section will request accreditation from OCEMS.

PARAMEDICS WHO ARE NOT LOCALLY ACCREDITED:

• Online Application

• Oral Interview

• Paramedic skills station

• Written examination

• 5-Day local accreditation class including OCFA pharmacology, OCEMS policies and how they work.

• 5-10 shift ride outs where paramedic skills are evaluated
