This training course is designed as a self-assessment opportunity for individuals preparing to step into a leadership role. The course combines one day of classroom instruction followed by a second day in the field with students working through a series of problem solving events in small teams (Field Leadership Assessment Course). Topics include leadership values and principles, transition challenges for new leaders, situational leadership, team cohesion factors, ethical decision making, and after action review techniques.

Experience on incident assignments in operations or support functions.

This course provides information and develops skills required to perform and hold firing operations on wildland fires and prescribed burns. This course contains a mix of online and instructor-led training including live fire exercises. The students will be engaged in wildland firefighting and firing operations. Students are required to complete the online training portion of the course and pre-course quizzes prior to taking the instructor-led training. This course meets and exceeds the objectives of the NWCG S-219 Firing Operations (2014) course.

  • Classroom Instruction: May 5-6, 2025.

  • Controlled Burn Dates: TBD, based on coordination with other agencies and fuel conditions.

  • To earn certification, students must complete both the two classroom instruction days and two burn days (dates to be determined). Attendance on burn days is mandatory for credit.

  • Live fire exercises depend on environmental conditions. If burns cannot proceed as planned, instructors will work with students to arrange alternative completion methods.

    Note: Two classroom sessions are available, but students only need to register for one.

This course provides an introduction to the function, maintenance and use of internal combustion engine powered chain saws, and their tactical wildland fire application. Field exercises support entry level training for firefighters with little or no previous experience in operating a chain saw, providing hands-on cutting experience in surroundings similar to fireline situations.

Description:

This course will be a review of the AH-330, Strike Team / Task Force Leader and All Hazard curriculum in addition to a refresher in OCFA expectations for each of these positions as well as Overhead/Single Resources for the upcoming wildland season.  The following objectives will be covered:

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply the Risk Management Process found in the Incident Response Pocket Guide (IRPG) to various incidents.

  • Identify and describe the responsibilities of all Overhead positions.

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply appropriate tactics in various incident situations with various resources organized into strike teams or task forces.

Mandatory for Battalion Chiefs. Highly encouraged for FF, FAE, and Captains that are on an incident management team (State, Federal, Local) or single resource overhead positions (qualified or trainee).

Staffing:

Overtime is authorized exclusively for Strike Team Leaders or trainees.

OCFA Battalion Chiefs- On-duty attendance approved; coordinate with EDO on daily conference calls.

OCFA Operations personnel- Off-duty attendance only. No on-duty attendance or backfill approved.

OCFA Professional Staff- On-duty attendance requires supervisor approval.

Description:

This course is beneficial for most ICS positions. Map and compass is a prerequisite for Fire Line EMT/Paramedic and Field Observers for Orange County Fire Authority employees. Course content includes use of maps and symbols, using a compass to find your field location on a map, using a GPS receiver to locate your position on a map, establishing waypoints, track logs and mapping the perimeter of a fire. The course includes both classroom and field exercises.

*Required for Field Observer, Fireline EMT and Fireline Paramedic*

Experience on incident assignments in operations or support functions

Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to the tools and techniques used to perform the duties of a Status/Check-in Recorder (SCKN). The course provides an overview of what a student can expect if dispatched to an incident.

Each student will need access to a computer that has the most current incident automation software. At the time of this publication, I-Suite is the industry standard.

Objectives

The desired outcome of this course is to prepare students to:

  • Set up and manage a check-in station.

  • Process information using incident automation software and other paper based methods.

  • Package the information into useful products.

  • Assist with demobilization.

PrerequisiteS:

  •  ICS-200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents

  • L-180, Human Factors

  • Basic computer skills in the Windows environment

Description:

This course is designed to introduce fire behavior calculations by manual methods, using nomograms and the Fire Behavior Handbook Appendix B. Students gain an understanding of the determinants of fire behavior though studying inputs (weather, slope, fuels, and fuel moisture). Students also learn how to interpret fire behavior outputs, documentation processes, and fire behavior briefing components.

*Required for Division/Group Supervisor*

INITIAL ATTACK INCIDENT COMMANDER

Description:

This course is designed to meet the training needs of the incident commander type 4 (ICT4). It is presented in a discussion/exercise format. The six instructional units include Foundation Skills; Intelligence Gathering and Documentation; Size Up the Incident; Develop a Plan of Action; Post-fire Activities; Evaluating Incident Objectives and Manage the Incident. Evaluation of the student is by unit tests and performance based evaluations.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate effective foundation skills (leadership, risk management, and communications) at the ICT4 level.

  • Gather and document essential information about the incident.

  • Size up the incident, develop plan of action.

  • Manage the incident through effective leadership.

  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate plan of action and make adjustments to the plan when necessary.

  • Conduct post fire activities.

Description:

This course introduces the roles and responsibilities of a Firing Boss (FIRB) and outlines duties of other personnel who may engage firing operations. The course discusses and illustrates common firing devices and techniques. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of the FIRB for planning, execution, safety, coordination, and evaluation of an ignition operation on a wildland or prescribed fire.

  • Describe the characteristics, applications, safety and availability of the various firing devices a FIRB has at their disposal.

  • Given a wildland or prescribed scenario, prepare a firing plan and briefing that contains desired fire behavior, firing techniques, required resources, coordination, safety and risk management factors, and communication, to meet specific objectives.

** Please Note: There are two offerings, May 1-2 and May 3-4. These dates are classroom days; there will be an optional field day for attendees of either class, weather and fuel dependent, on May 5 **

Description:

This course will be a review of the AH-330, Strike Team / Task Force Leader and All Hazard curriculum in addition to a refresher in OCFA expectations for each of these positions as well as Overhead/Single Resources for the upcoming wildland season.  The following objectives will be covered:

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply the Risk Management Process found in the Incident Response Pocket Guide (IRPG) to various incidents.

  • Identify and describe the responsibilities of all Overhead positions.

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply appropriate tactics in various incident situations with various resources organized into strike teams or task forces.

Mandatory for Battalion Chiefs. Highly encouraged for FF, FAE, and Captains that are on a team, OCFA internal IMT, or overhead positions.

If you cannot attend the in-person sessions, a video recording of the April 26th session will be available for review on Target Solutions. The deadline for completion will be June 19th, 2023.

Staffing:

Overtime Authorized.

Battalion Chiefs- On-duty attendance approved; coordinate with EDO on daily conference calls.

Field Operations- Off-duty attendance only. No on-duty attendance or backfill approved.

Professional Staff- On-duty attendance requires supervisor approval.

Qualified as a Strike Team Leader (STL) OR Task Force Leader (TFL) OR trainee in each of these positions as well as all Overhead assignments
